Night shifts are quieter, but fatigue and low visibility raise risk. Clients and security providers can both do a lot to support the guard on duty.
Light and visibility
Make sure gates, patrol paths and key areas are well lit and that torches are available.
Stay in contact
Guards should have a way to reach the supervisor and the client’s emergency contact at any time.
Patrol with a purpose
Define rounds, checkpoints and timings, and record them.
Look after the guard
Provide drinking water, a safe rest area and reasonable breaks so the guard stays alert.
Inspect after dark
Supervisors should visit posts at night and not only during the day.
